Shopify vs a custom built store for Nigerian sellers
The short answer: Shopify is usually the faster and easier way to open a store, especially if you have many products and want to manage everything yourself. A custom built store can suit you better if you want no monthly platform fee, full control, and a checkout shaped around how Nigerian customers actually order and pay. Neither is always better. It depends on your products, your budget, and who will look after the store.
Shopify and a custom built store compared
| Shopify | Custom built store | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Quick, using themes and ready made features | Takes longer, because it is built for you |
| Cost pattern | A monthly subscription, plus paid apps if you need them | A build fee up front, then hosting and optional maintenance |
| Payments in Nigeria | Through a third party provider such as Paystack, with some limits | Any provider that offers an integration |
| Control | Flexible within the platform | Shaped to your exact needs |
| Day to day management | A polished admin you can run yourself | An admin built for you, with training |
| Changes later | Often possible yourself with apps and themes | Usually done by your developer |
Cost
With Shopify you pay a recurring subscription for as long as the store runs, and some features need paid apps. Shopify can also charge an extra fee when you use a third party payment provider instead of its own payments. Plans and fees change, so check Shopify's current pricing before you decide. With a custom built store you pay a build fee once, then hosting and any maintenance you choose. Over a few years the totals can end up close, so compare the full cost over the period you plan to run the store.
Payments in Nigeria
This is where Nigerian sellers should look carefully. Shopify's own payments are not available in most African countries, so Nigerian merchants usually connect a third party provider, most often Paystack or Flutterwave. Paystack is available through Shopify's payment provider options, and availability depends on your store's country settings. Your products also need to be priced in a currency that your provider supports. Customers are normally sent to the provider's page to pay and then returned to your store. Some Paystack features, such as split payments, are not available through Shopify.
With a custom built store, your developer connects the provider directly, so you are not limited by what a platform exposes. You can read more in how to accept payments on a Nigerian website.
Control and flexibility
Shopify gives you a lot of flexibility inside its own structure. A custom built store has no platform structure to work around, so features such as local delivery options, WhatsApp ordering, and checkout steps can be built around your business. The trade off is that new features need development time.
Who looks after it
Shopify handles hosting and updates for you, and most owners can add products and manage orders themselves. A custom built store depends more on your developer for updates and bigger changes, so make sure you get training and agree on support. Whichever route you choose, make sure the store and the payment account are in your name.
Which one should you choose?
Shopify may suit you if you expect a large or fast changing catalogue, you want to run everything yourself without a developer, or you want to launch quickly and add features as you grow.
A custom built store may suit you if you want to avoid a monthly platform fee, you have a smaller range of products, or you need something that fits the way your customers order and pay in Nigeria.
